Smash burgers are the go-to for a quick, reliable, and flavorful meal. They’re perfect when you want something delicious without the fuss!
Today, we’re making Smash Burgers!
These burgers quite simple, and are all about smashing a ball of ground beef onto a hot griddle for a thin, crispy exterior.
Start with high-quality ground beef, seasoned with salt and pepper. Once your griddle or skillet is hot, place the patty on the surface and smash it down with a spatula into a thin, even layer. Cook it for just a few minutes on each side, and you’ll have a juicy, flavorful burger with the perfect crispy exterior.
Heres a video to guide you along the process.
Few Tips:
- Use freshly ground beef with a high fat content (around 80/20) for the best results. The fat will help keep the burger moist and juicy.
- Divide the ground beef into small, equal-sized balls (around 3-4 ounces each). Roll each ball gently in your hands to form a loose ball, then press down lightly to flatten it slightly.
- Preheat a cast-iron griddle or skillet over high heat until it’s very hot. You want it to be almost smoking hot.
- Place the burger balls onto the griddle or skillet, and use a spatula to smash them down flat. Press down hard and hold the spatula in place for about 10-15 seconds. This will help create a nice crust on the outside of the patty.
- Sprinkle a pinch of salt and pepper on each patty. You can also add other seasonings like garlic powder or onion powder if you like.
- After about a minute, use a thin spatula to flip the burgers over. They should be crispy and browned on the bottom. Cook for another 30-60 seconds on the other side.
- If you want cheese on your burger, add it to the patty during the last 20-30 seconds of cooking. It should melt nicely on top of the patty.
- Enjoy your delicious smash burger!
Process:
Triple Stack Smash Burgers
Whether you're a burger connoisseur or just looking for a quick and easy meal, smash burgers are sure to satisfy your cravings.
Equipment
- Griddle or Skillet (a flat cooking surface is essential for making smash burgers. You can use a griddle or skillet, but make sure it has a flat, smooth surface and is large enough to fit all your patties.)
- Spatula (you'll need a sturdy spatula with a wide, flat surface to press down on the patties and flip them.)
- Hamburger press (optional) (if you want to make perfectly shaped patties, you can use a hamburger press. However, it's not necessary as you can also shape the patties by hand.)
Ingredients
Patties:
- 1 1/2 lbs 80/20 Ground beef Choose a ground beef with a fat content of around 80/20, which will result in juicy, flavorful burgers.
- Salt and pepper These simple seasonings are all you need to flavor your burgers.
- 2 Hamburger buns Choose your favorite type of hamburger bun, such as sesame seed, potato, or brioche. I made homemade brioche for this recipe.
- 6 slices Cheddar cheese You can also use American cheese. Its usually the classic cheese choice for smash burgers, but you can also use other types of cheese if you prefer.
- Toppings You can customize your burgers with your favorite toppings such as lettuce, tomato, sunny side up egg, onions, pickles, and caramelized onions.
Sauce:
- 1/2 cup Mayonnaise
- 2 tbsp Ketchup
- 1 tbsp Dijon mustard
- 1/2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp Garlic powder
- Salt & Pepper to taste
- Have fun with it! You can also adjust the recipe to your liking by adding other ingredients such as hot sauce and/or honey for a touch of sweetness.
Instructions
Patties:
- Preheat a griddle or skillet over high heat for at least 5 minutes – with some olive oil.
- Divide the ground beef into 6 equal portions and shape them into balls. 4 oz each. Should make 6 patties total out of 1 1/2 pounds of ground beef.
- Place each ball on the hot griddle or skillet and immediately smash it down with a spatula to form a thin patty. Press down firmly to ensure that the patty is thin and has good contact with the cooking surface.
- Season each patty with salt and pepper.
- Cook the patties for 1-2 minutes on each side or until they are browned and crispy.
- If you're adding cheese to your burgers, place a slice on top of each patty during the last 30 seconds of cooking to allow it to melt.
- Toast the hamburger buns on the griddle
- Once the patties are cooked to your liking, remove them from the griddle or skillet and let them rest for a few minutes before serving.
- Assemble the burgers with 3 patties each burger (with a slice of cheese on each patty) and also add all of your desired toppings.
Sauce:
- In a small bowl, combine the mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.
- Stir until the ingredients are well combined.
- Taste the sauce and adjust the seasoning as needed.
- Spread the sauce on the top and bottom buns of your smash burger.

I love how much thought and detail you put into these recipes!!! Thank you ❤️❤️
These were fantastic! I don’t normally like homemade hamburgers, but I enjoyed these. I didn’t use homemade buns, but I will try that in the future. Thanks for the recipe!
